的确,如果我们面前摆着一个英语句子,那么非限制性定语从句最直观的标志就是关系词前面的逗号;再看句子本身的内涵,发现该从句所提供的信息是可以省略、可有可无的。
在现成的英语句子中识别出非限制性定语从句,最多只解决了阅读理解层面上的问题,与正确应用这类句子还有相当大的一段距离。广大中学生还无法做到在头脑中用英语思维和造句,他们面临的最根本的问题是:我用汉语思维、用英语表达,那么在表达出来之前,如何识别是否应该用非限性定语从句呢?
当学生面前没有一个现成的英语句子,心里想着汉语、却要用英语(口头或书面)表达出来的时候,“逗号”这个标志就不复存在,从句提供的信息是否可有可无就成了判断的唯一标准。这个分析和判断的过程,仍然要借用我们最熟悉、理解起来最透彻的母语。下面来看从高一上册课文中选取的几个例句。
例1:In China students learn English at achool as a foreign language, except for those in Hong kong, where many people speak English as a first or second language. (选自Unit 2 English around the world)(译:在中国,学生把英语当作一门外语来学,但香港的人们除外,在香港很多人是把英语当作第一或第二语言来用的。)
例2:There are more than 42 countries where the majority of the people speak English. (选自Unit 2 English around the world)(译:大多数国民都讲英语的国家超过42个。)
