【模拟训练参考作文16】My View on Dissatisfaction
I am in favor of this statement. It is human nature to seek more and want something different. There are many instances in our daily life that can verify it.
Travel makes a wise man better, but a fool worse.旅行使智者更聪明,使愚者更愚蠢。
Take a human’s basic need for example. When a person is starving, his greatest desire is to have something to eat, anything edible. After this need is satisfiedand when he no longer worries about his next meal, he feels that his food lacks quality. When this problem is solved, he may complain that his meal lacks variety or taste. He wants better and better meals and his desire can never be satisfied. According Maslow, human beings have five levels of need. After the first level of need—physical need (need for food, clothing and shelter) is satisfied, people want their second level of need—the safety and security need to be satisfied. When this need is met, they wish their social need, esteem need and self realization need to be met. Other human desires follow the same pattern. We do not want to wear the same clothes all the time and we want better furniture, better houses, better jobs, and more and more money. Many people are dreaming of becoming millionaires.
This human nature has been the impetus to the development of human society. Markets have flourished because we want more and better goods. The development of science and technology has never stopped because of our desire to discover more and more. And our living and working conditions have been incessantly improved owing to our endless demand for a better place to work and live in. If man had been easily satisfied, the human society would still be at its primitive stage.
【模拟训练参考作文17】Selfeducation
Selfeducation is valued as a process in which people develop their minds and gain knowledge by teaching themselves through reading books rather than learning things in school. Much of our knowledge and skills are gained by this means. It plays a very important role in our life.
Selfeducation stays with us throughout our lives. In order to keep up with the rapid development of modern world, we have to keep on trying hard to improve our selves. If you want to remain competent in the fierce competitions, you have to spend much time reading to make yourself qualified for the present job. Many famous people benefit a lot from selfeducation. For instance, Mark Twain’s formal schooling ended at the age of 11, but he continued to read extensively, and became “the true father of American literature.” Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US president, had very little schooling. And Thomas Edison, the greatest inventor, had only three months’ schooling. But they kept on learning, reading all their lives.
They owed their success to selfeducation.
True friendship is like sound health, the value of it is seldom known untilit is lost.真正的友谊犹如人体的健康,非到失去时人们才知其可贵。
Therefore, selfeducation is an effective way to make ourselves intelligent and learned. By this means, we can constantly improve our work and get more opportunities of promotion in our posts.
【模拟训练参考作文18】Letter Grades and Passfail Grades
Some educators believe that giving letter grades to students in their exams can best encourage competition among students. Others consider that passfail grades are more appropriate. Actually in my opinion, both methods have their advantages and disadvantages as they can be applied under different circumstances.
Letter grades divide the range of scores in a scale with A as the top score, and E or F as fail. This method can best represent the examiner’s opinion on each student’s level of study in a certain group of students. In order to get the top score, students compete fiercely, thus impelling to learn more. On the other hand, students are usually very nervous in exams, and may not perform well enough. Moreover, the method itself is very arbitrary. It’s difficult to draw a clearcut between A and B, B and C, and so on. Besides, a teacher’s preimpressi on of a student and his feeling at the moment often affect the scoring.
Passfail marking, on the other hand, is a more general evaluation of students’ performance in an exam. If students can show an adequate understanding of the subject matter, they receive a pass score. If failing to answer the question's satisfactorily, they receive a fail. With this system, students are more relaxed when the exam comes. And they can read extensively rather than focus their attention on a narrow subject area. However, this method does not give students much pressure, and they find it easy to drift along happily in their study. The competition among them is thus discouraged.
I think the two scoring methods should be used in combination under different circumstances. Letter grades can be applied to major areas of concentration to ensure that students spend enough time and effort in understanding the subject matter. Areas of minor concentration such as optional courses can be marked with passfail grades, as they require only a general understanding of the content.
