Dear Tom,

I’m glad to tell you something about the 16^th Asian Games in Guangzhou.

    As you know, Guangzhou successfully won the right to host the Asian Games on July 1, 2004. The Games, with the theme of “Thrilling games, Harmonious Asia”, will be held from November 12 to 27, 2010. It’s reported that there will be 42 events, 12,000 athletes and 50 sports gyms, the biggest scale ever in the history of the Asian Games. To make the Asian Games more special and unforgettable, at present, Guangzhou government is making every effort to create a beautiful environment, improve the traffic situation and it has invested several million yuan for the restoration of the main historic buildings. What we are eager to express is to carry the message of friendship, peace and blessings from Guangzhou to people from all over Asia.

The report narrates that during the “golden week” in 2008, the number of tourists in cities like Beijing increased dramatically, which contributed to a higher tourism revenue and heavier traffic.

Recently, the government announced that the “golden week” would be suspended, which caused different reactions. Some people think although the long “golden week” will be cancelled, we will have other traditional holidays like Mid-autumn holiday in return. Our time for relaxation is just divided into several parts while the total is not less than before. Besides, the traditional holidays can improve our sense of traditional culture and shorter holiday can ease the reception stress of tourist attractions and increase the chance of family reunion. Other people argue that “golden week” shouldn’t be suspended, for shorter holidays can make the traffic worse, which can decrease the chance of reunion of distant family members.

From my point of view, such change will do more good than harm for the simple reason that enjoying our traditional holiday can help us have a better understanding of our customs and thus rebuild our confidence in our own culture.  (30+153)
