　　广东省惠州市2014届高三上学期第二次调研英语试题
　　本试卷分选择题和非选择题两部分。满分135分，考试用时120分钟。
　　注意事项:
　　1.答卷前，考生务必坩黑色字迹的钢笔或签字笔将自己的市（县）/区、学校、班级、姓名、准考证号、试室号和座位号填写在答卡的密封线内。
　　2.选择题每小题选出答案后，用 2B铅笔将答题卡上对应题目的答案标号涂黑；如需改动，用橡皮擦干净后，再选涂其它答案；不能答在试题卷上。
　　3.非选择题必须叫黑色字迹的钢笔或签字笔作答，答案必须写在另发的答题卷各题指定区域内的相应位置上：如需改动，先划掉原来的答案，然后再写上新的答案；不准使用铅笔和涂改液。不按以上要求作答的答案无效。
　　4.考生必须保持答题卡的整洁。考试结束后，请将答题卷和答题卡一并交回。

　　第一节完形填空(共15小题；每小题2分，满分30分）
　　阅读下面短文，掌握其大意，然后从1?15各题所给的A、B、C和D项中，选出最佳选项，并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
　　Life is short. Are you doing what you love? Are you living your passion? If not, why? I am guessing most people will answer that question with "I have a loan, a lover and three kids to support". In the real world people have responsibilities. They have to make sacrifices (牺牲). You aren't supposed to be happy with your job but you do it because you have to.
　　With all due respect, they are wrong. You can take care of your responsibilities and be happy with your job. We spend over 1/3 of our day, at least five days a week performing or jobs. This is a lot of time to be wasted/wasting on something we don't enjoy, isn't it? Why not spend that time doing something you truly are passionate about for 50 hours a week instead of something that lacks meaning?
　　I think there is one main reason people don't follow their passion: Fear. Fear of how others will react, fear of failure, and fear that they can't do it themselves. I think the first part is for people to realize that they can conquer (战胜) their fear. You will fail at times and others will think you are crazy at times, but if you believe that you will succeed then you finally will.
　　I understand that it is not easy. I am in the middle of going through it right now. But understand that there are other people out there who have been through what you are going through and can help you greatly. They have failed, been ridiculed, and come out on the other end extremely successful. They are living proof that you can do what you love.
　　人生短暂。你所从事的是你热爱的工作吗？你生活在激情中吗？如果不是，为什么？我猜想大部分都会以“我要付房子的按揭贷款，还有爱人和三个孩子要养”之类的回答来搪塞这个问题。的确，在现实生活中，我们有自己的家庭责任，我们不得不做些牺牲，我们做着一些自己并不热爱的工作只因我们必需这样去做。
　　恕我直言，这一切并非正确。你可以兼顾你的责任，同时热爱你的工作。我们一天中要花去1/3的时间，至少一个星期5天去工作。如果不热爱这份工作，这确实是一笔很大的时间浪费，不是吗？为什么不能用这宝贵的时间，一星期50个小时去从做你真正激情洋溢的事情呢，而不是对你来说缺少意义的工作。
　　我认为有些人之所以不去追求他们的梦想是有一个主要的原因：恐惧。惧怕他人的指指点点，惧怕失败，惧怕没有能力完成他们的梦想。我认为第一步人们应该去战胜恐惧。有时我们会失败，有时别人也会觉得你有些疯狂，但只要你坚信你能够成功，那么你最终必将成功。
　　我理解这做起来并不容易。其实，我也正在克服追求我的梦想过程中的恐惧。但我们相信有些人已经从这个恐惧中坚强地走了出来，并愿意帮助我们。他们曾经失败过，被嘲笑过，但他们走向了胜利的彼岸。这些人的故事正是“你能做你所爱”的真实而有力的证据。
　　第二节语法填空(共10小题；每小题1.5分，满分15分）
　　阅读下面短文，按照句子结构的语法性和上下文连贯的要求，在空格填入一个适当的词或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空，并将答案填写在答题卡标号为16?25的相应位 置上。
　　Near China's northern borders lived a man who well versed in the practices of Taoism [.ta'ouzem]. His horse, for no reason at all, got into the territory of the northern tribes. Everyone felt sorry for  him.
　　"Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said his father.
　　After a few months, his animal came back, leading a fine horse from the north. Everyone congratulated him.
　　"Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a cause of misfortune," said his father.
　　Since he was well-off and kept good horses his son became fond of riding and eventually broke his thigh bone falling from a horse. Everyone commiserated with him.
　　“Why am I sad? "Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing,” said his father.
　　One year later, the northern tribes started a big invasion of the border regions. All able-bodied young men took up arms and fought against the invaders, and as a result, around the border nine out of ten men died. However, this man's son did not join in the fighting because he was crippled and so both the boy and his father survived.
　　
　　战国时期，靠近北部边城，住着一个老人，名叫塞翁。塞翁养了许多马，一天，他的马群中忽然有一匹走失了。邻居们听说这件事，跑来安慰，劝他不必太着急，年龄大了，多注意身体。塞翁见有人劝慰，笑了笑说：“丢了一匹马损失不大，没准会带来什么福气呢。”
　　邻居听了塞翁的话，心里觉得很好笑。马丢了，明明是件坏事，他却认为也许是好事，显然是自我安慰而已。过了几天，丢失的马不仅自动返回家，还带回一匹匈奴的骏马。
　　邻居听说了，对塞翁的预见非常佩服，向塞翁道贺说：“还是您有远见，马不仅没有丢，还带回一匹好马，真是福气呀。”
　　塞翁听了邻人的祝贺，反而一点高兴的样子都没有，忧虑地说：“白白得了一匹好马，不一定是什么福气，也许惹出什么麻烦来。”
　　邻居们以为他故作姿态纯属老年人的狡猾。心里明明高兴，有意不说出来。
　　塞翁有个独生子，非常喜欢骑马。他发现带回来的那匹马顾盼生姿，身长蹄大，嘶鸣嘹亮，膘悍神骏，一看就知道是匹好马。他每天都骑马出游，心中洋洋得意。
　　一天，他高兴得有些过火，打马飞奔，一个趔趄，从马背上跌下来，摔断了腿。邻居听说，纷纷来慰问。
　　塞翁说：“没什么，腿摔断了却保住性命，或许是福气呢。”邻居们觉得他又在胡言乱语。他们想不出，摔断腿会带来什么福气。
　　不久，匈奴兵大举入侵，青年人被应征入伍，塞翁的儿子因为摔断了腿，不能去当兵。入伍的青年都战死了，唯有塞翁的儿子保全了性命。
